MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641049368 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 17, for 'portable luggage monitor and tracker.'

Inventor(s) include Avisya Venkatachalam; Suhas Sridhar; Rohith K A; Daraneesh R; Chanthini Baskar; and Sasithradevi A.

The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A portable luggage monitor and tracker (100) ensures secure and efficient travel and incorporates a sensor module (102) connected to a microcontroller unit (104), which processes operational parameters and generates monitoring information. A communication module (106) transmits this data, while a power supply unit (108) supports all components. The sensor module (102) encompasses a GPS module (102A) for location tracking and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) (102B) with an accelerometer (102B-1) and gyroscope (102B-2), measuring motion and tilt. The microcontroller (104) links to a wireless web interface (110), a display module (112), and a hotspot unit (114) for local access without cloud dependency. A tamper detection and alert module (116) analyzes IMU data to identify abnormal activity and issue customizable alerts. Additionally, a data processing and visualization module (118) converts GPS time to local time, provides map-based references, and activates GPS updates based on motion, ensuring reliable monitoring of luggage."
