MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631020625 A) filed by Bihar Agricultural University, Bhagalpur, Bihar, on Feb. 22, for 'portable device for measuring nitrate leaching and hydraulic conductivity.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Vimal Kumar; Dr. Dharmendra Kumar Verma; Dr. Chandrabhan Patel; Mrs. Anita Kumari; Dr. Anil Kumar Singh; and Dr. Duniya Ram Singh.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a compact device for measuring nitrate leaching and hydraulic conductivity in soil samples under controlled laboratory conditions. The device comprises a vertically oriented leaching column configured to hold a packed soil column and maintain a defined hydraulic head, a reagent reservoir for supplying influent solution, and a multi-component inlet-outlet fluid transfer assembly enabling controlled fluid regulation. A filtration assembly positioned at a lower region of the column includes a mesh filter configured to retain soil particles while allowing passage of water and dissolved solutes, thereby preventing contamination and ensuring reliable effluent sampling. The outlet pathway enables controlled discharge with minimal hydraulic disturbance. The device is lightweight, portable, and fabricated using readily available materials, enabling cost-effective construction and maintenance. The invention provides accurate and repeatable measurement of hydraulic conductivity and nitrate leaching, making it suitable for soil research, agricultural studies, environmental monitoring, and academic laboratory applications."
