MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641001700 A) filed by Dr. M. G. R. Educational & Research Institute, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 7, for 'plant-based biodegradable film and method of preparation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Gomathi. K.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to a biodegradable bioplastic film (100) for food-packaging applications and a corresponding method (200) for manufacturing the same. The bioplastic film (100) comprises a primary polymeric matrix (102) derived from cress-seed (Lepidium sativum) mucilage, at least one natural plasticizer (104) selected from glycerol or sorbitol in an amount of 3-25% w/w, and a cross-linking agent (106) selected from citric acid or calcium salts. Optional functional performance enhancers (108) such as antimicrobial natural extracts or essential oils may be incorporated. The film (100) is formed by solution casting and controlled drying, followed by thermal treatment at 60-80 C, to obtain a thickness of 0.05-0.40 mm. The cooperative interaction of components provides enhanced oxygen-barrier properties, tunable mechanical strength, and complete biodegradation within 15-45 days, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional bioplastic films."
