MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541125612 A) filed by Chettinad Dental College And Research Institute; and Chettinad Academy Of Research And Education, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 12, 2025, for 'oral care formulation using marine polymers and phenolic compounds and method of preparation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include R. Saravanan; Aishwarya Senthil; and Pavithra A. J.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a biocompatible oral care formulation comprising chitosan, phloroglucinol, carrageenan, and ascorbic acid, which collectively establish a synergistic particulate matrix providing enhanced antimicrobial activity, improved enamel protection, increased mucoadhesion, and effective penetration into dental biofilm structures. The components interact to form a stabilized colloidal network with characteristic spectroscopic and structural signatures confirming polyelectrolyte complexation and controlled rheological behavior. The invention further provides a method for preparing the formulation, comprising sequential formation of a glycerol-oil premix, dispersion of chitosan and phloroglucinol with an abrasive in an aqueous medium, incorporation of ascorbic acid as a stabilizer and particle-size modulator, addition of carrageenan for structural reinforcement, controlled introduction of a surfactant, and a stabilization phase to enable matrix formation. The disclosed formulation and method collectively enable improved therapeutic delivery and represent an advancement in marine-biopolymer-based oral care technology."
