MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124620 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 9, 2025, for 'odor detection device.'
Inventor(s) include Malay Bhattacharjee; Jayanta Parui; and Reeves Wesley.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to an odor detection device (100) for identifying cannabis-related volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. The odor detection device (100) may include a sensor module (102) include VOC-responsive sensors to generate electrical signals upon exposure to cannabis-associated compounds. A control unit (202) may process the electrical signals by performing signal conditioning, feature representation, and classification using a learning model (318) trained to distinguish cannabis odor patterns from non-cannabis odor sources. Based on the processed representation, the control unit (302) may determine whether a cannabis-specific VOC signature is present and generate a corresponding alert. The odor detection device (100) may include a wireless communication interface (204) to transmit detection events to an external device. The odor detection device (100) enables selective cannabis identification, real-time monitoring, and reliable alert generation within a compact, portable detection platform."
