MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511131886 A) filed by Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, on Dec. 26, 2025, for 'monkey repellent- carbide gas cartridge.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Shalini Sharma; Dr. Sukhmani Kaur; and Gaganjot Kaur.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a safe, economical, and controlled monkey repellent device designed to generate acetylene gas through a regulated interaction between calcium carbide and water. The device comprises an upper water chamber, a lower dry chamber containing a sealed breathable pouch of calcium carbide, a calibrated drip mechanism for gradual water delivery, and a cotton- or porous-filled gas outlet vent for moderated gas diffusion. When water drips onto the carbide pouch, acetylene gas is produced in gentle, sustained quantities and is released safely through the filtered outlet, creating a pungent odour effective in deterring monkeys from rooftops, balconies, farms, and public spaces. The sealed pouch eliminates direct handling of carbide, while the drip-controlled reaction prevents sudden gas release and ignition risks. Constructed from simple, low-cost materials such as PVC or plastic bottles, the device offers an eco-friendly, reusable, and user-friendly solution to mitigate monkey intrusions without harming anything."
