MUMBAI, India, April 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641022831 A) filed by Nirmala College For Women, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Feb. 26, for 'method of preparing bio-degradable leafplate comprising anti-cancer activity.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. L. Kousalya; Dr. S. Packiaraj; Dr. Dhaarani V; Dr. A. Pushpaveni; and Dr. S. Manikandan.
The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Method of preparing Bio-Degradable Leaf plate comprising Anti- cancer Activity The present invention relates to an eco-friendly biodegradable disposable leaf plate prepared from mature leaves and leaf litters collected from selected tree species including Hibiscus tiliaceus, Syzygium samarangense, and Tectona grandis. The invention provides a sustainable alternative to synthetic disposable plates by utilizing naturally available, non-toxic and durable leaves. The collected leaves are cleaned, arranged in overlapping configuration, and secured using natural plant fibers. The plates are shaped either by a traditional manual binding method or by a hydraulic pressing method to obtain improved structural strength and uniformity. The invention further includes comparative evaluation of plates prepared from different species and production methods based on phytochemical composition, decomposition rate, organoleptic properties, and mechanical stability. Additionally, extracts derived from the prepared leaf plates are assessed for anticancer activity against colon cancer (HT -29) cell lines. The developed leaf plates demonstrate biodegradability, food safety, eco-compatibility, and potential healthpromoting properties, thereby offering a sustainable and socially beneficial disposable serving solution."
