MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611002027 A) filed by Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab, on Jan. 8, for 'method for preparing reef-safe sunscreen using stevia antioxidant assemblies.'

Inventor(s) include Ekamjot Kaur; and Meraj Ahmed.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a method (100) for preparing a reef-safe sunscreen composition using Stevia-derived antioxidant assemblies. The method involves extracting antioxidant fractions from Stevia leaves using an ethanol-water solvent system, purifying the extract using membrane filtration or chromatographic separation, and optionally nanoencapsulating the antioxidants for improved stability. An oil-in-water sunscreen emulsion containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is prepared, after which the Stevia extract is incorporated below 40 C to preserve bioactivity. The method enhances photostability, reduces UV filter degradation, and improves free-radical scavenging capability. The final composition is evaluated using antioxidant assays, SPF testing, and photostability assessment, resulting in an eco-friendly, mineral-based sunscreen with superior antioxidant protection."
