MUMBAI, India, July 25 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431004644 A) filed by Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, on Jan. 23, 2024, for 'method for oil and iron oxide recovery from higam sludge and a system thereof.'
Inventor(s) include Niloy Kundu; Mohd Zafar Iqbal; and Pratik Swarup Dash.
The application for the patent was published on July 25, under issue no. 30/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a method for the recovery of oil and magnetic iron oxide from High Gauss Magnetic Separator (HIGAM) Sludge and a system for facilitating the same. The disclosure describes the recovery of magnetic iron oxide and oil from HIGAM sludge through solvent extraction process. Particularly, the HIGAM sludge is treated with organic solvent(s) followed by magnetic separation and solvent distillation. Methods in the art lead to generation of sludge that has to be subject to incineration or disposal outside. The method of the present disclosure, however, does not generate any additional sludge and the solvent employed in the method may be reused again either in the same method or for a different application."
