MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511078003 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on Aug. 16, for 'method and system for real-time river discharge monitoring and flood forecasting.'
Inventor(s) include Om Maheshwari; Dr. Vivek Gupta; Dharkan Anand; and Kunal Mittal.
The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A method (500) and system (200) for real-time river discharge monitoring and flood forecasting are disclosed. A processor (204) receives water surface elevation data from a vertically oriented radar sensor (210), surface velocity data from an angled radar sensor (216), video data from a high-resolution camera (212), and terrain elevation data from an aerial drone (214) with a photogrammetry module. A first discharge estimate is computed using a hydraulic algorithm based on the elevation and velocity data. A second discharge estimate is computed by processing the video data using a vision-based flow analysis algorithm. The processor compares the first and second estimates to generate a reconciled discharge value. A digital twin model of a river stretch is updated using the reconciled discharge value and the terrain elevation data. The system determines whether predefined flow thresholds are breached and triggers one or more alert outputs, in response to the threshold breach."
