MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511070380 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on July 24, for 'membrane distillation device integrated with fluid flow spacer for treating wastewater and method thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Anshul Yadav; Arvind Kumar; Chandra Prakash Singh; and Raj Vardhan Prasad Patel.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a membrane distillation device integrated with a fluid flow spacer for treating wastewater and a method thereof. The membrane distillation device (100) comprises a support frame (102), a feed channel frame (104), the fluid flow spacer (106), a hydrophobic microporous membrane (108), a permeate spacer (128), and a vapour collection base plate (110). The support frame (102) provides structural support. The feed channel frame (104) provides visual monitoring of a wastewater treatment process. The fluid flow spacer (106) induces secondary flows and turbulence in the heated wastewater to optimise fluid mixing, diminish temperature polarisation and concentration polarisation, and mitigate membrane fouling. The hydrophobic microporous membrane (108) provides a phase separation of the heated wastewater for averting residual wastewater penetration from the hydrophobic microporous membrane (108). The permeate spacer (128) promotes vapour flux across the hydrophobic microporous membrane (108). The vapour collection base plate (110) discharges vapour."
