MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541133784 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 30, 2025, for 'management of vehicular traffic on roadways.'

Inventor(s) include Vanajakshi, Lelitha Devi; Lakshminarayanan, Chandrashekar; Nandakumar, Anirud; and Sivakumar, Ashwanth.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present subject matter discloses techniques for managing vehicular traffic on roadways. The technique involves acquiring real-time visual data from one or more RGB cameras 104a and real-time thermal data 5 from one or more thermal cameras 104b. The cameras 104a, 104b are aligned such that their fields of view substantially overlap to capture corresponding data. Frames of visual and thermal data are combined into a fused multi-channel input. This input is processed using a machine learning model to detect vehicles in traffic. Detected vehicles are tracked across 10 successive frames, and trajectory data is generated for each tracked vehicle. Traffic metrics are computed from the trajectory data, comprising vehicle speed profiles, traffic density, lane-changing frequency, and stop-go behavior. A unified output indicative of the computed traffic metrics is generated for traffic management."
