MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124031 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 9, 2025, for 'malleable retractor attached corneal shield.'
Inventor(s) include P. Sai Krishna; B. Raj Prakash; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Orbital floor fractures are commonly encountered in maxillofacial trauma and require precise surgical intervention to prevent functional and aesthetic complications. Protection of the globe and adequate exposure of the fracture site are critical during reconstruction procedures. Conventional orbital retractors, while effective for tissue retraction, lack integrated mechanisms to safeguard the globe, thereby increasing the risk of intraoperative ocular injury and prolonging surgical time due to limited adaptability. To address these limitations, a novel malleable retractor-attached corneal shield has been developed. This innovative instrument combines a protective corneal shield with a flexible, contourable retractor arm, enabling simultaneous ocular protection and optimal surgical exposure through a single device. The retractor arm can be shaped intraoperatively to accommodate individual anatomical variations, enhancing access to the orbital floor while minimizing soft tissue trauma. This dual-function design reduces the need for multiple assistants or instruments, improves surgical efficiency, and ensures continuous protection of the globe. The proposed device represents a significant advancement in the field of orbital trauma surgery by integrating safety, functionality, and convenience into a single, surgeon-friendly tool."
