MUMBAI, India, Oct. 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441028395 A) filed by James Chellappan, Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, on April 6, 2024, for 'mad mill method: a system and process for holistic assessment of learning outcomes in education.'
Inventor(s) include James Chellappan; Arunodaya James; and Arubiya James.
The application for the patent was published on Oct. 10, under issue no. 41/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The MAD Mill Method is a novel approach to evaluating the attainment of learning outcomes in the context of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), particularly in the dynamic landscape of educational transformation in India. The current system assigns subjective weightings (low, medium, and high) to map course learning outcomes (CLOs), program learning outcomes (PLOs), and graduate attributes (GAs) without considering crucial factors such as student learning hours invested by students. In contrast to traditional subjective mapping methods, this offers an objective and holistic approach that considers the crucial factor of learning hours. MAD, standing for Multiplication Addition Division, employs a straightforward yet comprehensive formula to map learning outcomes based on the allocation of learning hours. By objectively assessing learning mastery counts and the fraction of learning hours involved, the MAD Mill Method provides a transparent and accurate evaluation of both institutional and individual student attainment of Graduate Attributes. This method incorporates continuous internal assessment (CIA) through the Mill process, which emphasizes providing diverse opportunities until success is achieved for all learners. It promotes CIA, fosters student success through diverse learning opportunities, and delivers a transparent and competency-based evaluation report in the form of a "Statement of Competencies (SoC)." In contrast to the prevailing emphasis on marks and grades, the MAD Mill Method focuses on the attainment of competencies, offering a more comprehensive understanding of student achievement. Implementation of this method can be facilitated through simple tools such as MS Excel sheets or dedicated computer software, streamlining the process of generating SoC in place of conventional mark sheets. The MAD Mill Method offers a significant advancement in educational assessment, aligning with the principles of OBE while promoting equity, transparency, and student-centered learning."
