MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631010208 A) filed by Jis College Of Engineering, Kalyani, West Bengal, on Jan. 30, for 'low-cost ai-powered skin disease scanner for rural area.'
Inventor(s) include Harsh Kumar Gupta; Istakbal Hussain; Aditya Thakur; Dr. Sitanath Biswas; Mrs. Saswati Rakshit; Dr. Abhisek Roy; Mr. Abhisek Hazra; Mr. Subhadip Goswami; and Dr. Sayan Chakraborty.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a low-cost, AI-powered skin disease scanning system intended for use in rural and medically underserved areas. The system operates on a standard smartphone and employs an on-device, lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) to analyze images of human skin captured using the smartphone camera. Advanced image preprocessing techniques are utilized to enhance image quality under suboptimal conditions such as poor lighting and noise. The system performs disease classification entirely offline and provides real-time diagnostic confidence scores along with preliminary treatment or referral guidance. By eliminating dependence on internet connectivity and specialized medical equipment, the invention enables accessible, portable, and scalable dermatological screening, empowering non-specialist healthcare workers to facilitate early detection and improved healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings."
