MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122249 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'lightweight mutual authentication system for iot endpoint devices.'
Inventor(s) include Naveenkumar Jayakumar; Joshva Devadas T; Orra Raghavendra Reddy; M Abdul Nabeel; and Yerur Mohammad Irfan.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a lightweight mutual authentication system for Internet of Things endpoint devices. The system includes a microcontroller configured to operate as a wireless access point, a memory storage component storing authorized device identifiers in hashed form, a MAC address verification module configured to extract MAC addresses from connecting devices, hash the MAC addresses, and compare the hashed MAC addresses against the stored authorized device identifiers, and an HMAC-SHA256 authentication module configured to generate and verify authentication tokens for mutual authentication between the microcontroller and devices. The system eliminates traditional cryptographic key exchange protocols while maintaining robust security through MAC address hashing and token-based verification mechanisms suitable for resource-constrained IoT devices."
