MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641062379 A) filed by Chaitanya Bharathi Institute Of Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana, on May 16, for 'iot-enabled smart wheelchair navigation system with edge intelligence.'
Inventor(s) include Chaitanya Bharathi Institute Technology; Dr. G. N. R Prasad; Dr. Sugamya Katta; Mr. Kommu Gangadhara Rao; Dr. Teki Satyanarayana Murthy; Ms. Swathi Kothapalli; and Mr. Geedikanti Srikanth.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an IoT-Enabled Smart Wheelchair Navigation System integrated with edge intelligence for enhancing independent mobility, safety, accessibility, and real-time decision-making for physically challenged and elderly individuals. The proposed system combines Internet of Things (IoT) technology, embedded sensors, edge computing modules, artificial intelligence algorithms, and wireless communication frameworks to create an intelligent wheelchair capable of autonomous and semi-autonomous navigation in indoor and outdoor environments. The system incorporates ultrasonic sensors, LiDAR modules, cameras, GPS, inertial measurement units, and environmental monitoring sensors for obstacle detection, path planning, terrain analysis, and user safety assessment. Edge intelligence enables local processing of navigation data, thereby reducing latency, minimizing dependence on cloud infrastructure, and ensuring rapid response during emergency situations. The wheelchair integrates voice recognition, gesture control, mobile application support, and health monitoring features to improve user interaction and accessibility. Real-time IoT connectivity facilitates remote tracking, caregiver communication, predictive maintenance, and cloud-based analytics for performance optimization."
