MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621004185 A) filed by L. D. College Of Engineering; Shubhangi Shukla; Dr Mihir Rameshbhai Vasavada; Madhav Raval; and Dr Darshni M. Shukla, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Jan. 15, for 'ionic engine powered catamaran.'

Inventor(s) include Shubhangi Shukla; Dr Mihir Rameshbhai Vasavada; Madhav Raval; and Dr Darshni M. Shukla.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Ionic Engine Powered Catamaran The present invention provides a silent, propeller-less marine propulsion system for twin-hull catamarans using plasma-ionic thrusters (5,6) that generate sustained thrust via noble gas ionization and electrostatic ion acceleration, followed by exhaust neutralization for charge-balanced discharge. The system enables steering and speed control through independent differential thrust between hull-mounted thrusters, eliminating mechanical propellers, shafts, and hydrodynamic rudders, resulting in an ultra-low acoustic, zero-combustion, and low-maintenance watercraft propulsion architecture. The electrical subsystem comprises rechargeable lithium-ion energy storage coupled to DC-DC power conditioning and isolated high-voltage transformer excitation lines for stable plasma ignition. A wireless Wi Fi control unit governs directional and speed commands through onboard microcontroller logic, allowing precise real-time manoeuvring. The invention reduces drag, noise, mechanical wear, and carbon emissions, making it suitable for silent surface transport, survey crafts, and clean marine navigation."
