MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541112309 A) filed by S. Venkat; G. Vasumathi; C. Poonguzhali; and S. A. Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 17, 2025, for 'intelligent waste sorting system.'
Inventor(s) include S. Venkat; G. Vasumathi; C. Poonguzhali; and S. A. Engineering College.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Waste segregation is mandated by law because it significantly enhances the efficiency of recycling processes. Proper segregation reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills, making waste management more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Moreover, separating waste is crucial for public health. Hazardous materials, if not properly managed, can pose serious long-term health risks. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that such waste is safely disposed of and not mixed with regular household or office waste. Unfortunately, the most common method of waste disposal still involves unplanned and uncontrolled dumping in landfills, which poses serious threats to human health, as well as to plant and animal life. Addressing this critical issue, smart waste sorting systems have emerged as an innovative solution. These systems sort waste into distinct categories such as metal, dry, organic, and biomedical (hospital) waste, increasing the potential for recovery, recycling, and reuse. Organic waste, for example, can be converted into compost or methane gas. While compost helps reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, methane can serve as a renewable energy source. Similarly, metal waste can be efficiently recycled or repurposed, contributing to a more sustainable waste management cycle."
