MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124179 A) filed by Sona College Of Technology, Salem, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 9, 2025, for 'intelligent waste segregation system using iot for biomedical waste management.'

Inventor(s) include Ms. Vinodhini V; Ms. Jayareka K S; Mr. Vishva E; Mr. Tirumurugaa R S; Mr. Vedapraksh S; Ms. Sujjith B A; and Mr. Vinoth J.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The invention relates to a Smart IoT-based Biomedical Waste Segregation System designed for hospitals. The system uses a camera, ultrasonic sensors, microcontroller, and servo motors to automatically detect, classify, and segregate biomedical waste into three compartments: sharps/rigid waste, soft disposables, and miscellaneous waste. The camera captures images of waste inserted into the bin, and the microcontroller processes the data to determine the correct category. A servo-controlled rotary platform directs the item to the appropriate compartment. IoT connectivity enables real-time monitoring of bin capacity and waste logs. The invention improves hospital hygiene, reduces human exposure, and ensures compliance with biomedical waste rules."
