MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541114815 A) filed by Sri Sairam Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 21, 2025, for 'intelligent road safety system with real time traffic sign and pothole detection.'

Inventor(s) include Monashini S; Mithra R S; Mageshwari M; and Anurada T.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Misjudging traffic signs and unobserved road potholes are major reasons for road accidents and vehicle damage. They are serious challenges to road safety in the modem transportation system. In the context of such problems, this project proposes a hybrid computer vision framework that handles Traffic Sign Recognition and Pothole Detection within one real-time system. The Traffic Sign Recognition module uses a Convolutional Neural Network trained on the German Traffic Sign Recognition Benchmark dataset, which classifies 43 types of road signs. The Pothole Detection module involves an object detection model using YOLO, trained with labeled road defect datasets for accurate identification and location of potholes. Combining both modules into one system provides real-time alerts to drivers about regulatory signs and road hazards. The novelty of this project lies in the combined detection approach. This methodology enhances driver awareness and safety, as well as supports transportation and monitoring applications."
