MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511113794 A) filed by Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, on Nov. 19, 2025, for 'intelligent food management and hygiene system.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a retrofit smart refrigerator shelf liner system which discloses for automated food inventory management, spoilage detection, and waste reduction. The system comprises modular, flexible liner tiles embedded with weight, image, and volatile organic compound sensors, powered by a rechargeable battery supplemented with thermoelectric and vibration-based energy harvesting. An intelligent system processes sensor data to identify food items, track consumption, predict expiry dates based on household-specific conditions, and detect spoilage risks. The self-sterilization via UV-C micro LEDs and antimicrobial coatings ensures hygiene. A mobile application provides real-time inventory updates, expiry alerts, recipe suggestions, and a gamified sustainability dashboard to encourage waste reduction. The system integrates with voice assistants and grocery platforms for enhanced functionality. This low-cost, scalable, and sustainable solution transforms any refrigerator into a smart appliance, addressing food wastage, hygiene, and user convenience while ensuring data privacy through hybrid intelligent processing."
