MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541125568 A) filed by Abinaya Varshini A D; Gayathri R; Gopika P; Pooja S; and Bindhu J, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 12, 2025, for 'in vitro characterization of zea mays husk extract loaded polyvinyl alcohol (pva) film for use as a wound dressing.'
Inventor(s) include Abinaya Varshini A D; Gayathri R; Gopika P; Pooja S; and Bindhu J.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to the development of a bioactive wound dressing film formulated using Zea mays husk extract incorporated into a polyvinyl alcohol (PYA) matrix. The invention out I ines a systematic methodology beginning with the defatting of corn husk using a non-polar solvent to remove lipids and waxy components, thereby enhancing the efficiency of subsequent phytochemical extraction. Bioactive compounds are then extracted from the defatted husk using aqueous ethanol under controlled conditions to obtain a stable and phytochemical-rich extract. This extract is uniformly integrated into a PYA solution and cast into films to produce a flexible, transparent, and biocompatible wound dressing material. The developed extract-loaded PYA film exhibits favorable physicochemical properties along with significant in-vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial, and moisture-handling characteristics. In-vitro evaluations confirm its potential as a natural, sustainable, and functional biomaterial for wound dressing applications."
