MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541114822 A) filed by Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 21, 2025, for 'hybrid stair climbing wheelchair with curved spoke tri wheel, rack and pinon middle wheel lift, and.'
Inventor(s) include Pravin M; Risalath S; Deepan A; and Vetreselvan E.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A hybrid stair-climbing wheelchair is disclosed. The system employs a pair of middle motorized differential wheels for efficient propulsion and steering on flat surfaces, and a front curved-spoke tri-wheel assembly configured for stair ascent and descent. A rear tri-wheel assembly provides passive support and tip-over stability during stair engagement. A rack-and-pinion lifting mechanism elevates the middle wheel assembly during stair-climbing mode to prevent interference with the tri-wheel operation. A micro controllerbased control unit coordinates mode selection, alignment, lift actuation, and safety limits, while an optional wireless interface allows user control via a mobile application. The disclosed configuration enables smooth transition between surface and stair travel, ensuring mechanical simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and operational safety suitable for assistive mobility or robotic applications."
