MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541121480 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'gsm-alarm smart card energy meter.'

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The GSM-Alarm Smart Card Energy Meter is a new system that is being developed with an aim to change the electricity consumption monitoring, control and billing. This system combines the technology of smart card with GSM module of communication and a built in logic of control to automate energy metering whilst allowing greater user control and real time alerts. Their main idea is based on using prepaid energy since the user is required to load his smart card with energy tokens and plugging it into the meter. The embedded micro controller reads the card and energizes the power delivery and keeps deducting units as they are consumed. As the balance falls to the critical level an alarm is activated on the system to notify the user and a low-balance SMS is sent out through the GSM module. Where there is zero balance, the system will automatically cut off the load to unpaid consumption. There is also the Capability of the GSM module to detect remote checking,-balance inquiries, and reminders to the users and the utility providers. The innovation- avoids the manual readings of the meters, delay in billing, and offending power demand besides giving consumers the freedom to easily control their power consumption expenditure. The system is also compatible with centralized or online recharging making it easy to use and scale. This project is designed to meet residential, commercial, and industrial need to provide secure, cost-effective yet transparent energy management solution in which the utility and consumers both like the benefit. GSM-Alarm Smart Card Energy Meter is a proactive innovation in the modernisation of power grid by integrating smart automation, transmission of real-time and smart meters that are user friendly."
