MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641061650 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Ramapuram Campus; and Easwari Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on May 15, for 'group attendance monitoring system using ai.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. N. Parthipan; Dr. T. Mothilal; Dr. E. Balaji; Dr. S. Senthilbabu; and Dr. K. Parthiban.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Attendance management is a fundamental administrative function in educational institutions, yet traditional methods such as manual roll calls and paper-based registers are time-consuming, error-prone, and susceptible to proxy attendance. These limitations become more significant in large classrooms, where manual processes disrupt teaching time and reduce overall efficiency. To overcome these challenges, this project proposes an advanced IoT-based group attendance system using a Raspberry Pi as the core embedded platform. The proposed system automates attendance recording by capturing student data through a camera module and processing it using computer vision techniques. Facial recognition algorithms implemented using OpenCV enable the system to detect and identify multiple students simultaneously, thereby facilitating efficient group attendance marking without requiring individual interaction. To enhance system reliability, an RFID module is integrated as a backup authentication mechanism, ensuring accurate attendance recording even under challenging conditions such as poor lighting or occlusion. The system further incorporates IoT-based cloud integration, where attendance data is securely transmitted and stored in real time on platforms such as Firebase, AWS IoT, or ThingSpeak. This enables remote access, centralized data management, and real-time monitoring through a user-friendly administrative dashboard. The system also supports data logging, report generation, and analytics, which assist educators and administrators in tracking attendance patterns and improving decision-making processes. By minimizing human intervention, reducing errors, and preventing unauthorized attendance marking, the proposed solution significantly enhances operational efficiency and data accuracy. The use of cost-effective hardware and open-source software ensures scalability and ease of deployment in various educational environments. Overall, the system provides a reliable, secure, and intelligent framework for modern attendance management, aligning with the growing demand for smart classroom technologies and IoT-enabled automation."
