MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541131115 A) filed by Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 24, 2025, for 'greenai smart waste recycling using artificial intelligence for sustainable environments.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. M. Thangamani; Dr. E. Shankar; M. Subbaiya; and V. Yuvaraj.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention, titled GreenAJ Smart Waste Recycling using Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Environments, discloses an intelligent and automated waste classification system designed to improve recycling efficiency through artificial intelligence and computer vision. The system utilizes a Convolutional Neural Network enhanced with transfer learning to accurately identify waste categories such as plastic, paper, metal, glass, cardboard, and organic matter fiom captured images. A structured preprocessing and data augmentation pipeline ensures robust performance under varied lighting and environmental conditions. The invention further integrates an explainable Al mechanism using Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) to visually highlight the image regions influencing classification decisions, thereby ensuring transparency and trust. Classified results are stored and synchronized through cloud infrastructure and presented via real-time dashboards for analytics and decision support. The system seamlessly integrates with loT-enabled smart bins for automated segregation, reducing manual intervention and promoting sustainable waste management within smart city ecosystems."
