MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541123027 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'gesture-based communication aid for seniors using iot.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Priyanka N; Mr. Dishank Mittal; and Ms. Mahek Singhal.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a computer-implemented method for gesture-based control of Internet of Things devices. The method captures real-time video of hand gestures performed by a user using a camera, extracts hand landmarks from the captured video using computer vision processing, classifies the extracted hand landmarks into predefined gestures using a machine learning model, and controls connected Internet of Things devices or sends alert notifications based on the classified gestures. The system includes a gesture detection and preprocessing block that processes video input through a MediaPipe Hands Model to identify hand landmarks, a gesture classification block with a KeyPoint Classifier for static gesture recognition and a Point History Classifier for dynamic movement patterns, an IoT control block with an ESP32 microcontroller that interfaces with Firebase for device communication, and a notification system that transmits alerts to caregivers when emergency gestures are detected."
