MUMBAI, India, Nov. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531103276 A) filed by Dr. Sofia Banu; and Mr. Ankur Das, Guwahati, Assam, on Oct. 27, for 'fungal consortium for consistent and rapid induction of high-quality agarwood in aquilaria trees and method of preparation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Sofia Banu; and Mr. Ankur Das.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 28, under issue no. 48/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a fungal consortium and a method of preparation thereof for induction of high-quality agarwood in Aquilaria trees. The consortium comprises fungal species Periconia spp., Trichoderma spp., and Fusarium spp. with lignocellulosic barrier (LCB) degrading potential which enables rapid and consistent agarwood resin formation. The preparation method includes culturing the fungal species individually, preparing spore suspensions, and mixing them in defined ratios to obtain the consortium. The invention provides agarwood resin with chemical composition and marker compound abundance substantially similar to naturally formed agarwood. It is a cost-effective, scalable, less labour intensive, and eco-friendly approach for commercial agarwood production which would help generate income for the agarwood farmers."
