MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531000057 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Guwahati, Assam, on Jan. 1, 2025, for 'formulation of encapsulated catechins based functional tea beverage.'
Inventor(s) include Kamal Narayan Baruah; Siddhartha Singha; and Ramagopal V. S. Uppaluri.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Present invention provides formulation for a functional tea drink that incorporates encapsulated catechin extracts. This formulation is designed to improve nutrient absorption and has the ability to effectively reduce cholesterol levels in the gut. Catechin extracts were obtained by the hot water extraction method from fresh tea leaves of the S3A3 cultivar. with purity at 56.1% and exhibited bioactivity by reducing cholesterol levels in the stomach by up to 40.96%. Said catechin extracts were enclosed within potato starch nanoparticles having a enhancement of AA recovery at 81.94, 56.01% for CE:SNP(1:1, w/w) and CE:SNP (1:2, w/w) respectively, in comparison to the catechin extracts in their raw form. The hot water formulations remained stable.Thefunctional tea drink formulation has improved organoleptic properties, and surprisingly incorporation of said starch ecncapsulated catechin nanoparticles do not change the flavour of the black tea."
