MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431039000 A) filed by Tezpur University, Tezpur, Assam, on May 17, 2024, for 'formulation and process for conservation of cellulosic handmade paper manuscripts and machine-made paper books.'
Inventor(s) include Robin Kumar Dutta; Rituparna Saikia; Priya Devi; and Mousum Dutta.
The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a formulation for conservation of cellulosic paper based substrates comprising select interactive aqueous polymer/s including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer with alkalinity of pH range of 7.5-8.5 capable of hydrogen bond induced PVA coating on said substrate surface free of any penetrative intermolecular interaction between PVA and cellulosic fibers favouring effective substrate conservation. Preferably, a formulation including 2.5 to 10% of aqueous solution of interactive polymer PVA in presence of 1-1.5mL of 6.25M ammonia in per litre of the PVA based formulation is developed for attaining select alkalinity in the range of pH 7.5-8.5, for desired deacidification of cellulosic paper based substrates to enhance mechanical strength by 2 to 3 folds for improved longevity of such substrates. A method of conservation of cellulosic paper based substrates is also provided comprising, preparing an interactive aqueous polymer/s including polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer based aqueous formulation in presence of ammonia at pH in the range of 7.5-8.5; by dipping the fresh/aged cellulosic paper based substrates completely in said prepared PVA based formulation kept in a plastic tray under exposure of said select alkalinity for 1-2 minutes; by air-drying of the treated cellulosic paper based substrates to obtain improved mechanical strength with enhanced longevity in a non-toxic method without using any chemical modifier reagent."
