According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a novel microbial fermentation process for the de novo biosynthesis of curcumin using Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain Sathaye05, deposited under Accession No. PX583339.1. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound conventionally obtained from plant sources, is produced in the present invention through a plant-independent bacterial fermentation system. The disclosed process comprises culturing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain Sathaye05 in a nutrient medium comprising a carbon source and a nitrogen source, preferably glucose and peptone, under controlled fermentation conditions. In a preferred embodiment, the medium contains peptone at about 10 g/L and glucose at about 40 g/L, and fermentation is carried out at 25 C and 150 rpm for approximately 20 hours. Metabolites present in the culture supernatant are recovered using an organic solvent, preferably ethyl acetate, and analyzed by high-resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HR-LCMS), confirming the presence of curcumin by detection of a characteristic ion at m/z 367.1209 in negative ion mode. Notably, the biosynthesis of curcumin occurs in the absence of any added metabolic precursor or inducer, demonstrating an unexpected intrinsic biosynthetic capability of the deposited Bacillus strain. The invention thus provides the first evidence of de novo curcumin production by a Bacillus species, offering a cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable microbial alternative to plant-based curcumin production."
