MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641007342 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 25, for 'eye-blink and head-tilt based assistive communication system and method.'

Inventor(s) include A S Rassel; Tarun Eashwar; Dr. Konguvel E; and Dr. Vidhya S.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An eye-blink and head-tilt based assistive communication system (100) is provided for a non-verbal user. The system (100) includes a camera (102) configured to capture images of a user's face, a processing unit (104) configured to extract facial landmarks and compute an eye aspect ratio (EAR), an inertial measurement unit (IMU) (106) configured to sense head orientation, a controller (108), and an audio output unit (110) operatively coupled to the controller (108). The controller (108) determines eye open and eye closed states based on comparison of the EAR with a predetermined threshold, enters an active mode upon continuous eye closure for a first predetermined duration, and exits the active mode upon continuous eye openness for a second predetermined duration shorter than the first predetermined duration. In the active mode, the controller (108) generates a command by combining a counted number of eye blinks with a detected head-tilt direction and delivers the command as audible speech locally without cloud connectivity."
