MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122957 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'explainable ai system for automated chest disease detection from radiographic images.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Baiju B V; Mr. Rishank Bandi; Mr. Heet Sarju Shah; and Mr. Sparsh Chamoli.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides an explainable artificial intelligence system for automated chest disease detection from radiographic images. The system includes a web-based interface configured to receive chest radiographic images, a model management module configured to load deep learning models for image classification, a prediction module configured to process the chest radiographic images using the deep learning models to generate multi-label classification results for chest pathologies, an explainable AI module configured to generate gradient-weighted class activation mapping visualizations that highlight regions most influential in classification decisions, and a backend server configured to coordinate communication between the web-based interface, model management module, prediction module, and explainable AI module. The deep learning models include convolutional neural networks and vision transformer architectures for processing medical images, while chest pathologies detected include atelectasis, cardiomegaly, consolidation, edema, and pleural effusion."
