MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541084974 A) filed by Karpagam Academy Of Higher Education; Karpagam Institute Of Technology; M Vignesh; E Bhuvaneswaran; N Dhamothiran; A Srinivasan; and P Parameshwaran, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Sept. 8, 2025, for 'evaluation of banana peel powder as a natural coagulant for the treatment of wastewater.'

Inventor(s) include M Vignesh; E Bhuvaneswaran; N Dhamothiran; A Srinivasan; and P Parameshwaran.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The purpose of this work is to study the treatment of banana peel powder as a natural coagulant, with particular focus on domestic waste. Wastewater treatment usually includes per step flocculation which is often dependent on rather expensive and polluting chemical coagulants. Polyacrylamide and other such materials are found in banana peel, which makes it na environmentally judicious option. The research worked out the usage of different concentrations of banana peel powder to this end on treated sewage sludge samples in order to determine decrease in the volume of suspended solids, the level of turbidity, and the amount of chemical oxygen demand (COD). It was established that certain dosage positively impacted the results and led to improvement in these parameters. The study also compared the performance of traditionally used coagulants with that of banana peel powder and its performance showed promise of being economical and non-toxic to the environment. Because banana peels are a large amount of agricultural waste, this is not only plant friendly but also cost effective. All in all, this research indicates that there is the potential of using banana peel powder as a coagulant agent for treating domestic waste water."
