MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641007164 A) filed by Vignan's Foundation For Science, Technology And Research, Tenali, Andhra Pradesh, on Jan. 24, for 'evaluation of anti-bacterial activity of coriander sativam and piper betel linn, cuminum cyminum with reference to penicillin and tetracycline.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Patibandla Lavanya.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention aimed at developing "Evaluation of Antibacterial Activity of Coriander sativum L, Piper Betel Linn, Cuminum cyminum Extract with reference to Penicillin and Tetracycline drugs by using Disc diffusion method. Before the extraction process, the plant parts are taken in required quantity like coriander seeds (250g), betel leaves (30.5g), cumin seeds (250g) are dried under the sunlight in shade. Extraction is done by using maceration process and Soxhlet apparatus. Extractions different compounds are carried out using different solvents like ethanol for coriander sativum, methanol for piper betel Linn, Dimethyl bromide for Cuminum cyminum. For this process different quantities of components are taken like coriander powder (250g), betel leaf powder (26.45g), cumin seeds powder (260g). In this process the coriander powder and betel leaf powder are taken into the beaker and add 150ml of ethanol and 150ml of methanol and beakers cover with aluminum Foil. [0019] Kept in a dark place for 5 days until the solvent is evaporated or sun dried. In this process the cumin seeds powder is placed in a Soxhlet apparatus. 200ml of solvent is taken for the extraction of cumin plant component. Chemical tests are done alkaloids are coriander sativum (positive) and cumin cyminum (positive). Test is done for volatile oils of coriander sativum (positive) and Cuminum cyminum (positive). Chemical test for betel leaf Dragandroff's test (positive), Hager's test (positive), saponification test (positive). In order to test the extract with components, different suitable compounds are tested by using different bacterial activity of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria like E. coli, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus. Preparation of nutrient broth with Beef extract, Meat extract, NACL, Peptone, Agar-Agar, Ethanol, Methanol, Dimethyl Bromide, Distilled water etc. After the extracted plant products are tested for the antibacterial drug activity by using Autoclave and Incubator and. And preserved incubator in 5 days in order to test the zone of inhibition the culture of bacteria was streak down nutrient medium and zone of inhibition found to be coriander sativum zone of inhibition is (3.5cm), Betel Linn zone of inhibition is (4.0), cumin cyminum zone of inhibition is (2.8cm), penicillin zone of inhibition is (3.2cm), Tetracycline zone of inhibition is (2.5cm)."
