MUMBAI, India, Dec. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511097900 A) filed by Dr. Rajeev Jain; and Dr. Sukhminder Kaur, Chandigarh, India, on Oct. 10, for 'eugenol-impregnated cotton bud sorbent device for green forensic toxicology.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Rajeev Jain; and Dr. Sukhminder Kaur.

The application for the patent was published on Dec. 12, under issue no. 50/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a novel Cotton Sorbent Extractor (CSE) device, fabricated by functionalizing commercially available cotton buds with eugenol, a natural component of clove essential oil. This functionalization imparts amphiphilic properties to the cellulose fibers, enabling multiple interaction mechanisms for efficient adsorption of trace-level drugs and pesticides. The device facilitates direct immersion extraction from diluted biological matrices such as blood and tissue, followed by elution into a minimal volume of ethanol, yielding clean extracts suitable for instrumental analysis. The invention offers a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally benign sample preparation method highly compatible with forensic toxicology applications, providing rapid, sensitive, and reproducible extraction while minimizing sample and solvent volumes."
