MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122241 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'emotion-based music recommendation system using facial expression recognition.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Muthunagai S U; Pranjay Singhvi; Sanidhya Nagpal; and Abhinav Kholiya.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a system for emotion-based music recommendation. The system includes a facial expression capture module configured to acquire real-time visual input from a user, an emotion detection module having a machine learning model trained to classify facial expressions into predefined emotional categories, an emotion-to-music mapping component that associates detected emotional states with corresponding music selection criteria, a music recommendation engine configured to generate personalized music recommendations based on the detected emotional state, and a user interface module configured to present the generated music recommendations to the user. The emotion detection module processes facial expressions through convolutional neural networks that analyze grayscale images extracted from video input. The system maps detected emotions to appropriate music genres and generates dynamic playlists that align with the user's current emotional state, providing contextually relevant music suggestions."
