MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621043964 A) filed by Arif Dastgir Sheikh, Sangli, Maharashtra, on April 6, for 'electrochemically anodized earth-abundant 1d-cu2o nanostructured coatings for efficient solar water desalination application.'
Inventor(s) include Arif Dastgir Sheikh.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Selective absorber coatings consisting of a Cu metal as an underlayer and black 1D-Cu2O NR or 1D-Cu2O NN overlayer have been successfully deposited using electrodeposition followed by electrochemical anodization process onto stainless steel substrates. The diffuse reflectance spectra of the 1D-Cu2O-based coatings show high absorbance (over 90%) in the visible spectrum of sunlight, where most of the solar flux is converted to heat. The heating rate of 1D-Cu2O nanorods and nanoneedles is 2.57 C/min and 4.85 C/min, respectively. Our study has successfully demonstrated that 1D-Cu2O nanoneedle coatings can reach as high as 190 C within 30 minutes of exposure to collected sunlight. Further, 1D-Cu2O NN-coated SS container showed a promising output and efficiently distilled about 45 5 ml of water collected in 60 minutes of collected sunlight exposure. A significant advantage of this work is that the method can deposit nanocoatings on containers of any shape and size under atmospheric environmental conditions. Overall, our findings demonstrated that developed 1D-Cu2O nanoneedle thin-film-based coatings are a suitable candidate for efficient solar distillation units, offering a cost-effective and reliable method of producing fresh water. This study has successfully analyzed the impact of the morphology of 1D nanostructured materials on the efficient conversion of solar radiation into thermal energy. Results demonstrated that the Cu2O thin films prepared by electrodeposition fulfil the requirement of low-cost, sustainable, and efficient solar-absorbing materials for applications like solar cookers and solar water desalination plants."
