MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641017445 A) filed by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Vignana Jyothi Institute Of Engineering And Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana, on Feb. 17, for 'edge based plant leaf chlorophyll estimation using controlled illumination rgb imaging and machine learning regression inference.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. D. Ramesh Reddy.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses an edge-powered chlorophyll estimation system for non-destructive, real-time evaluation of plant leaf chlorophyll content using RGB imaging and machine learning. The system comprises an enclosed imaging chamber (100) with an internal illumination unit (110) providing uniform lighting and an optical camera module (120) capturing an RGB image of a leaf. An edge processing unit (130) performs preprocessing including cropping and background removal, colour correction through white balancing and brightness normalization, and resizing to a predetermined resolution, followed by extraction of colour features comprising mean RGB values and ratio indices. A trained regression model is executed locally on the edge processing unit (130) to estimate chlorophyll content and output the result through an interface (140). A reference colour patch (150) within the chamber enables automatic calibration for illumination invariance, and a confidence score controls re-capture under poor imaging conditions. The invention provides portable, low-cost and offline chlorophyll estimation suitable for field deployment."
