MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541117135 A) filed by Samuel Abraham. D; Akilan. V; Dharaneesh. V; Pratheesh. P; and Vignesh. J, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 26, 2025, for 'eco-friendly pavement design using plastic waste modified bitumen.'

Inventor(s) include Samuel Abraham. D; Akilan. V; Dharaneesh. V; Pratheesh. P; and Vignesh. J.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This project focuses on the development of an eco-friendly pavement design by utilizing plastic waste as a modifier in bitumen. The growing problem of plastic pollution has become a major environmental concern, as plastic materials are non-biodegradable and accumulate in the ecosystem. To address this issue, waste plastics such as carry bags, bottles, and packaging films are collected, cleaned, and shredded into small pieces. These plastic pieces are then incorporated into hot bitumen or coated over heated aggregates to produce a plastic-modified bituminous mix suitable for flexible pavement construction. The modified bitumen is tested for various engineering properties such as softening point, penetration value, ductility, and Marshall Stability. The results reveal significant improvements in strength, durability, water resistance, and temperature stability of the pavement compared to conventional bitumen. The addition of plastic also helps in reducing the total bitumen content required, leading to lower construction costs and efficient utilization of resources. Q) This project proves that the use of waste plastic in pavement construction not only enhances road C) m performance but also provides an effective method for solid waste management. It is a sustainable, economical, and practical approach that supports environmental conservation and promotes greener infrastructure development for the future."
