MUMBAI, India, July 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202521059173 A) filed by Dr. Shubhranshu Shekhar Mohanty, Maharashtra, on June 20, for 'dr. mohanty's modular spacer templates for infected knees.'
Inventor(s) include Shubhranshu Shekhar Mohanty.
The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a challenging complication, often managed with a two-stage revision using antibiotic-loaded spacers. Traditional spacers, typically handmade or prefabricated, lack anatomical precision and are associated with poor joint mechanics, instability, and inconsistent outcomes. This invention presents a modular knee spacer template system designed to improve spacer construction during revision TKA. The system includes interchangeable femoral and tibial moulds, allowing intraoperative customization based on patient anatomy, bone loss, and soft tissue balance. The templates facilitate the creation of anatomically conforming, articulating spacers with consistent antibiotic delivery and enhanced mechanical stability. In preclinical testing, our template-fabricated spacers demonstrated improved alignment, reproducibility, and durability compared to conventional methods. This innovation offers a standardized, surgeon-friendly solution that optimizes infection management while preserving function and facilitating easier second-stage reimplantation. Our modular spacer templates represent a meaningful advancement in personalized and effective treatment of infected TKAs."
