MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631062887 A) filed by C. V. Raman Global University, Bhubaneswar, Orissa, on May 18, for 'double helical coil air heater for sustainable heating applications.'

Inventor(s) include Mr. Pradeep Kumar Nayak; Dr. Taraprasad Mohapatra; Mr. Sudhansu Meher; Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra; and Dr. Ajit Kumar Pattanaik.

The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a double helical coil air heater designed for sustainable and energyefficient heating applications including room heating, agricultural drying, and HVAC air preheating. The apparatus comprises an outer cylindrical shell fabricated from PVC material having an inner diameter of 134 mm and a total length of 1000 mm, within which two concentric helical coil tubes made of copper are concentrically housed. The helical coil tubes are provided in inner diameter variants of 6.4 mm, 9.52 mm, and 12.7 mm, with a wall thickness of 0.81 mm, a helical pitch of 16.67 mm, and 119 turns per coil, resulting in a total coil length of approximately 38.4 meters and an effective inside heat transfer surface area of 1.42 m. The outer shell is externally insulated to minimize thermal losses. The device operates through a hot water loop, wherein water heated by solar thermal collectors is circulated through the helical coil tubes by a centrifugal pump, and an open air loop, wherein atmospheric air is forced across the helical coil surfaces by an axial fan and exits as a heated air stream. The double helical coil geometry induces centrifugal secondary flow and Dean vortices, significantly enhancing the convective heat transfer coefficient and overall thermal efficiency compared to conventional single-coil air heaters. Multisource heating compatibility is ensured through an auxiliary electric immersion heater incorporated in the hot water storage tank. The invention provides a compact, cost-effective, and renewable energy-powered air heating solution for diverse applications across residential, agricultural, and industrial sectors."
