MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122143 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'digital water footprint calculation system for agricultural products.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Kalaavathi B; Mr. V M Ajay; Mr. Pranav V S; and Ms. Rohan Anil Kochummen.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a digital water footprint calculation system for agricultural products. The system includes an ESP32 microcontroller (32) configured to process sensor data and perform water footprint calculations, a soil moisture sensor operatively connected to the ESP32 microcontroller (32) and configured to measure volumetric water content in agricultural soil, a temperature sensor operatively connected to the ESP32 microcontroller (32) and configured to measure ambient temperature affecting crop evapotranspiration, and a rain sensor operatively connected to the ESP32 microcontroller (32) and configured to detect precipitation events. The ESP32 microcontroller (32) is programmed to calculate blue water footprint based on irrigation requirements when soil moisture falls below predetermined thresholds, calculate green water footprint based on precipitation data from the rain sensor, and generate irrigation control signals based on the calculated water footprint data."
