MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124407 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 10, 2025, for 'diagnostic test strips for ascitic fluid analysis.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Gowthama Rubini T; Dr. Jayganesh P; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a diagnostic strip specifically developed for ascitic fluid analysis. Ascitic fluid examination is essential for identifying spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and differentiating the underlying causes of ascites, but current methods depend on laboratory testing, which is timeconsuming and often unavailable in urgent or resource-limited settings. Existing urine dipsticks have been applied to ascitic fluid but lack accuracy due to chemical differences and interference from blood, bilirubin, and proteins. The invention provides a multi-parameter strip with dedicated reagent pads for leukocyte esterase/neutrophils, protein, glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and bilirubin/amylase. Each pad is used to the biochemical characteristics of ascitic fluid, with an optional interference-control layer. The strip can be read visually using a colour scale or digitally with a portable reader. This innovation enables rapid, reliable, and bedside detection of infection and biochemical profiling of ascitic fluid, supporting timely diagnosis and treatment decisions."
