MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641061038 A) filed by Dr B Nagaraj; Dr. Vaidevi Sethuraman; Dr. Kumar Janakiraman; and Ms. Akhila Devarajan, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on May 14, for 'development of nanogel for oral mouth ulcer using custard apple (annona reticulate l.).'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Vaidevi Sethuraman; Dr. Kumar Janakiraman; and Ms. Akhila Devarajan.

The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Oral ulcer is a common condition affecting people of all age groups and is characterized by painful lesions in the oral mucosa that interfere with eating, swallowing, and speaking. Although various synthetic drugs are available for treatment, their use is limited due to side effects and poor patient compliance, leading to an increased interest in herbal-based therapies. This invention describes the development of a nano-based gel formulation for the treatment of oral ulcers using Annona reticulata L. leaf extract. The formulation incorporates bioactive herbal components within a nanogel matrix to enhance mucosal adhesion, improve drug penetration, and provide controlled and sustained release at the site of action. The nanogel offers improved retention in the oral cavity despite high salivary flow, thereby enhancing therapeutic effectiveness. Nanogels provide advantages such as high biocompatibility, biodegradability, improved permeation, and controlled drug release through nanoscale delivery systems. The present formulation represents a novel approach for effective management of oral ulcers with improved healing and patient compliance compared to conventional formulations."
