Abstract: The invention presents a chemical method to deposit bifunctional manganese vanadium oxide thin coatings directly on conducting substrates for efficient alkaline water splitting. The coatings are fabricated by SILAR protocol using dilute aqueous manganese salts and sodium orthovanadate with intermediate rinsing, repeated for 40-150 cycles to obtain tunable thickness and mass loading of 0.2- 2.5 mg cm-2. The process operates at 300-312 K from 0.01-0.075 M precursor baths, enabling large-area (up to 5 × 5 cm2), conformal, binder-free coatings without vacuum equipment or high-temperature annealing. The resulting Mn-V oxide layers exhibit an MnV2O6 type amorphous/nanocrystalline phase with porous, interconnected spherical nanoparticles that generate high electrochemically active surface area. In 1 M KOH SILAR-grown electrodes act as bifunctional electrocatalysts toward both OER and HER, affording overpotentials of about 309 mV and 458 mV, respectively, at 10 mA cm-2 with favorable Tafel slopes. In two- electrode configuration, identical Mn-V oxide coating used as anode and cathode deliver 10 mA cm-2 at an overall cell voltage of ~1.54 V, with stable operation under prolonged electrolysis. Collectively, disclosed process provides a scalable, low-cost route to earth-abundant Mn-V oxide thin coating electrodes suitable for integration into practical alkaline electrolyzers for green hydrogen production.
