MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541123602 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 8, 2025, for 'design of a miniaturized nanosilver coated urinary catheter for obstetrics.'
Inventor(s) include Sowparnika L; Seetha Lakshmi K; Koyeli Girigoswami; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This invention relates to the design and evaluation of a miniaturized silver-coated urinary catheter specifically developed for obstetric use during active labour. The present device is constructed from medical-grade silicone, with a reduced size of 8 Fr and shortened length of 15 em, optimized for the female urethra in labour. A thin, uniform silver nanoparticle coating ( 100-300 nm) is applied to external and internal surfaces, enabling controlled release of silver ions for 12-24 hours, sufficient for the duration of catheterization in active labour. The catheter features a rounded atraumatic tip, dual drainage eyelets, and an optional low-volume retention balloon (5-10 mL). This novel design provides improved comfort, reduced trauma, and effective antimicrobial protection, representing a significant advancement in intrapartum bladder management."
