MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541117847 A) filed by Easwari Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 27, 2025, for 'design and fabrication of a portable lifter for elderly people in train coach.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The invention relates to a portable lifting device designed lo assist elderly and physically challenged passengers in train coaches during boarding, seating, and alighting. The system comprises a lightweight foldable base frame, a scissor or linear actuator lifting mechanism, a cushioned seat platform, and a electrically powered drive system. The device operates using a i2V DC rechargeable battery or manual lever to raise and lower the seal smoothly within a lifting range of 0-500 mm, supporting a load capacity of up to 50 -100 kg. The design includes safety' features such as an emergency stop switch, non-and mechanical locking to prevent accidental descent. The compact and foldable construction allows easy portability and storage within train coaches without requiring any structural modification. The invention provides an ergonomic, low-cost, efficient solution for improving accessibility and comfort of elderly passengers in railway transport, promoting independent and safe movement in confined coach environments."
