MUMBAI, India, April 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411071606 A) filed by Council Of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, on Sept. 20, 2024, for 'design and development of biofumigation system.'

Inventor(s) include Subramanian Ezil Vendan; Vivek Babu; Ravichandra Hospet; and Pratiksha Prabhakar Gawali.

The application for the patent was published on April 10, under issue no. 15/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a design and development of biofumigation system for the safe storage food grains. The product development particularly relates to the biofumigation process for the protection of food grains from insect pest infestations. About 1000 Kg of food grains was filled and known amount of insects were released into the system. A biofumigant formulation was added in the fumigant sample holder. Then biofumigation process was performed in the biofumigation system up to 7 days. As a result 100% insect control (Oryzaephilus surinamensis, Rhyzopertha dominica, and Tribolium castaneum with wheat grain at 5 days exposure and Callosobruchus maculatus with green gram and check pea at 3 days of exposure) was achieved except Sitophilus oryzae. Internal humidity and temperature was monitored during the biofumigation process. The developed system mechanism enhanced the diffusion and permeability of biofumigants inside the stored food commodities and controlled the insect pests."
